Richard Sylvester, Sr. ("Dick" or "Silly" to his lifelong friends) founded CCI Building Restoration, Inc. in 1993, but his relationship with hammers and nails—well, really, with ladders and brushes—goes back to the 1950s, when he was a high school student and an entrepreneurial house painter.
Sure, Richard occasionally painted the wrong house, but he enjoyed success through his passion for meeting new people coupled with an exceptional work ethic. His life-of-the-party personality didn't hurt, either.
Later, Richard founded one of the largest restoration companies in the business and, by the late 1980s, had cornered the competitive Boston market. But he wasn't done yet. Richard was always looking for ways to grow and expand the business and he did so by branching off into various avenues and making his company a family affair by bringing his children on board.
Son, Richard Jr., and daughter, Tina, joined the business at the ground floor and worked the trenches, learning, growing, and gaining more responsibility—although both say they never painted the wrong house. Richard's commitment to exceeding clients' expectations and building strong relationships was passed on to his children, and a second-generation company was born.
When Richard passed away in 2004, Tina assumed his role as President of CCI. "My father groomed me for this position," she says. "He taught me that, 24/7, 365 days a year, your business is who you are. It is a part of me and my family, not a separate entity. I enjoy meeting new people and staying connected with repeat clients. I also enjoy the thought of one day passing this second-generation company on to the third generation."
